A Perfect Storm Could Shed Light On Secretive Energy Markets

Commodities Market

When Olav Refvik wanted to boost the price of heating oil to make a lucrative energy deal even more lucrative, the Morgan Stanley trader locked up several storage tanks the bank owned near New York Harbor to squeeze supply. Far from being illegal, the maneuver -- which earned him millions and the moniker "King of New York Harbor" -- is business as usual in the "regulated" commodities market.

The rough-and-tumble Chicago-based commodities market is an unusual beast on Wall Street, where practices that would be frowned upon at the flashier New York stock exchange, are considered quite acceptable.

Sanders is one of a five legislators who has proposed legislation in recent weeks that would change the freewheeling Chicago market by strengthening regulations and, in some cases, bolstering the oversight powers of the Commodities Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). Sanders is hoping to compel the CFTC to invoke its emergency powers to stop traders from participating in excessive oil speculation.

Tony Blair knew of secret policy on terror interrogations

For evil to succeed....
clipped from www.guardian.co.uk
Tony Blair

Tony Blair was aware of the existence of a secret interrogation policy which effectively led to British citizens, and others, being tortured during counter-terrorism investigations, the Guardian can reveal.

The policy, devised in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks, offered guidance to MI5 and MI6 officers questioning detainees in Afghanistan whom they knew were being mistreated by the US military.

British intelligence officers were given written instructions that they could not "be seen to condone" torture and that they must not "engage in any activity yourself that involves inhumane or degrading treatment of prisoners".

But they were also told they were not under any obligation to intervene to prevent detainees from being mistreated.

"Given that they are not within our custody or control, the law does not require you to intervene to prevent this," the policy said.

NOW Liz Cheney Thinks We Should Be Careful About Using Words Like Terrorism

Yeah, because when the spotlight shines on them, the roaches hiss and run for cover.
clipped from crooksandliars.com

Liz Cheney appeared on Larry King Live with James Carville and when asked about the tragic shooting at the Holocaust Museum, she suddenly has a problem with calling this type of violence terrorism. Now we need to be "careful" with our words.

And of course Cheney thinks this has nothing to do with our political discourse either. Heaven forbid she'd allow any of the blame for whipping up the crazies in this country to be laid at the feet of her buddies over at Fox News.

Anyone want to take dibs on how different a conversation this would have been had this been a foreign terrorist rather than a right wing, white-supremacist, domestic terrorist?

I do think people need to be a little bit careful about using words like terrorism before we know exactly -- you know, clearly, he was psychotic. But we don't really know much yet about whether or not he was representing any sort of an organization. I think we need to be a little bit careful.

London's Metropolitan Police accused of waterboarding suspects

Thus the sickness spreads.
A police hat

The claims are part of an investigation which includes accusations that evidence was fabricated and suspects' property was stolen

Metropolitan Police officers subjected suspects to waterboarding, according to
allegations at the centre of a major anti-corruption inquiry, The Times
has learnt.

The torture claims are part of a wide-ranging investigation which also
includes accusations that officers fabricated evidence and stole suspects’
property. It has already led to the abandonment of a drug trial and the
suspension of several police officers.

However, senior policing officials are most alarmed by the claim that officers
in Enfield, North London, used the controversial CIA interrogation technique
to simulate drowning. Scotland Yard is appointing a new borough commander in
Enfield in a move that is being seen as an attempt by Sir Paul Stephenson,
the Met Commissioner, to enforce a regime of “intrusive supervision”.

The So Called Libera Media VIII: NYT carried false Pentagon claims

Cont....

The article seemed to adopt the Pentagon’s contention that freed prisoners had “returned” to terrorism, ignoring independent reporting by The Times and others that some of them may not have been involved in terrorism before but were radicalized at Guantánamo. It failed to distinguish between former prisoners suspected of new acts of terrorism — more than half the cases — and those supposedly confirmed to have rejoined jihad against the West. Had only confirmed cases been considered, one in seven would have changed to one in 20.

Most of the caveats about the report were deep in the article, where they could hardly offset the impact of the headline, the first paragraph and

WHEN former Vice President Dick Cheney assailed President Obama’s plan to close the prison at Guantánamo last month, he used ammunition plucked right from that morning’s Times.

The top front-page headline that day, May 21, read: “1 in 7 Detainees Rejoined Jihad, Pentagon Finds.” The article reported in the first paragraph that an unreleased Pentagon study had concluded that about one in seven of the 534 prisoners already transferred abroad from Guantánamo had “returned to terrorism or militant activity.”

It was big news on a morning when Obama and Cheney would deliver dueling visions of how to keep the nation safe. “One in seven cut a straight path back to their prior line of work and have conducted murderous attacks in the Middle East,” Cheney said in a speech.

The lapse is especially unfortunate at The Times, given its history in covering the run-up to the Iraq war.

NASA & Google Join Forces to Research Singularity -the "Intelligence Revolution" (VIDEO)

Real AI effects are closer than you might think, with entirely automated systems producing new scientific results and even holding patents on minor inventions. The key factor in singularity scenarios is the positive-feedback loop of self-improvement: once something is even slightly smarter than humanity, it can start to improve itself or design new intelligences faster than we can leading to an intelligence explosion designed by something that isn't us.

The Singularity University proposes to train people to deal with the accelerating evolution of technology, both in terms of understanding the directions and harnessing the potential of new interactions between branches of science like artificial intelligence, genetic engineering and nanotechnology.

Post-02-04-09-su2 It is the best of times.  Anyone who complains about science not delivering it's promises simply doesn't comprehend how incredible this information age truly is: you can go to the mall RIGHT NOW and buy devices which would have reshaped the world ten years ago, are reshaping it today, and technology isn't slowing down - it's accelerating exponentially.  There are incredible innovations just around the corner and that's the thinking behind the creation of Singularity University..

An advanced academic institution sponsored by leading lights including
NASA and Google (so it couldn't sound smarter if Brainiac 5 traveled
back in time to attend the opening ceremony).  The "Singularity" is the
idea of a future point where super-human intellects are created,
turbo-boosting the already exponential rate of technological
improvement and triggering a fundamental change in human society -
after the Agricultural Revolution, and the Industrial Revolution, we
would have the Intelligence Revolution

Obama's "interference" in Israeli politics

clipped from www.salon.com
Both Likud Party members in Israel as well as their Americans supporters – including members of both parties in the U.S. Congress – are beginning to complain that the Obama administration is unduly "interfering" in Israeli politics by insisting on a full cessation of settlement growth.  The Jerusalem Post today reports:  "US President Barack Obama's administration's criticism of Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu's policies has crossed the line into interfering in Israeli politics, top Likud ministers and MKs said Tuesday."
A country, a company or an individual has every right to remain free of "interference" from others as long as they remain independent of the party seeking to "interfere."  But if one chooses instead to become dependent on someone else or seeks help and aid from them, then complying with the demands of those providing the aid is an inevitable price that must be paid – and justifiably so.

"Today’s article from The Jerusalem Post notes that Kadima officials are worried that a perception by Israelis of undue interference from Obama -- whether the perception is justified or not -- will strengthen Netanyahu’s government due to resentment by Israeli voters. We might want to remember that lesson when it comes to Palestinians specifically and other countries generally: citizens in other countries tend not to like it when we try to dictate to them who should govern them and who shouldn't, and the attempt often emboldens support for the very people we oppose."
